There is a massive poverty issue in Grahamstown. The majority of people are poor, and street children are commonly seen almost everywhere begging mostly for money but often food as well. However, in light of this, some members of the community have learnt how to grow cheap edible foods. In an essay (which can be found at:
Grahamstown is mentioned as having community gardeners who grow a diverse variety of wild, but edible, greens and crops.
I have told several people about this, and made a point of telling friends of mine doing Botany, Environmental Science, and most importantly I got hold of my journalist friends. They say they might look further into it and hopefully get something published to make the Grahamstown public more aware of what is going on, and just how they themselves can develop resilience to the poverty and hunger problems - if only in a small way.
