One of the major challenges that we currently face, especially in rural areas, is that the local farmers just cannot compete with all the agricultural product being imported into the town. Living in London, Ontario there are many farms, not within, but around the city, and their business is not as prosperous as it could be. In order to build a sustainable food network around the area, and to secure enough amount of food resource for the long-term, it is important that we support them.
One of the big things, if you are from a town like mine, is bringing farmers market to the university campus. University students have busy enough life, most of the times they cannot afford to spend time going grocery shopping, or even if they do, they wish they could spend that time on something else. So by bringing farmers market to campus often enough, perhaps once a week, we can provide the students with sources they need, and provide the farmers with more business opportunities. At the beginning the cost of food can be more expensive than a big-box grocery store, so it could even be helpful if the local/municipal government can provide some sort of subsidy, just so the industry can grow. It might be [a little bit] costly for the government at the beginning, but it will eventually pay for itself. Also, it will create a system that will bring forward more fresh food resources that can last for longer period.
