A crash course in changing the world.
In my town, Wayne, NJ, and surrounding towns face terrible flooding caused by the Passaic River Basin and Pompton River. While these floods are not as catastrophic as those in southern United States, they do millions dollars in damage. Residences are forced out of their homes and having to pay for damaged items ( those who don't have flood insurance). Floods are devastating no matter where they are, and they take a deep financial toll on people. Flooding hasn't stopped for many years, and I foresee this becoming a bigger issue for our town, but without a solution to the problem, we can only make sure that our response to these disasters are the most important.. These floods shut down business in the area as well, causing some economic hardship.

Information is needed in times like these and it is urgent to get the help these people need as fast as possible. From re-routing traffic to finding people dry areas to stay for the night, to finding ways of helping them fix damaged property. The information that is needed immediately is:
1) does anyone need immediate medical attention?
2) is anyone stranded ?
3) is anyone in need of a shelter, food, water etc?
4) do we have a routes where emergency vehicles can get through and/or get people out?
5) do we have routes so other residences can go get home safely?
All this information is very first thing I would want to know. We would need to dispatch emergency works, police officers, and other citizens to get the help we need. It is even more important for everyday citizens to have access to communication tools( what i like to call : Emergency Communication Network) through a smart phones, and other portable devices, gps navigation, mapping, routes, etc, to give locations of where they are and where there is helped needed immediately. Hopefully, they supply us with as much information as possible so we can send help. Secondly, we would need to deploy local Red Cross to help supply shelters, food, etc for those who need to leave their homes. The Red Cross would be apart of this Emergency Communication Network. Police officer will be deployed to direct traffic and block off roads that are flooded. They should also be in the air via helicopter to scout areas and help with finding people. Hopefully, the Emergency Communication Network will be used by everyone in the area, and surrounding areas, especially all police, and emergency, and hospitals, government officials, schools, media outlets, etc.
I believe having a network for this would increase response time and need of helping others. We can't truly predict how fast and how terrible the floods will be, but it's pertinent that we respond as quickly as possible.
