I live in the most industrialized and prosperous area of Brazil. It is difficult for anyone in my position to even imagine someone suffering hunger or extreme poverty situations. Even in the slums sorrounding major cities (the "favelas"), people don't starve.
But there always was (and still are) many areas of the country, mainly those far from dense urban centers and on our northeastern mainland (wich is basicly a desert -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sert%C3%A3o ) that suffer with poor administration, corrupt polititians and very little if not any rain. These areas are plagued with famine each time the climate doesnt help.
And with all the mess we are doing to our planet, the climate is being very nasty.
Our current President started a bold programme to fight famine in the end of the year 2003. Its called "Programa Fome Zero" (Zero Hunger Programme).
Its an amazing initiative, and I'm going to link its main goals and achievments here. Please take a look:
