To try to guess where I'll be ten years from now is a fool's errand. But thankfully, we weren't asked to soothsay, only to spell out our vision of our best-case future as we imagine it. Obviously, that makes my job considerably easier. My best-case scenario goes something like this.
Within the next several years, I will essentially be financially secure and independent, thanks to early entrepreneurial work in the nascent e-books market. After working on an innovative technology to bridge the gap between printed and electronic information, I am bought out for a handsome sum. Freed of this initial start-up, but pleased that the technology has taken off and is in good hands, I turn my attention to philanthropy. (The only reason I refuse to be more specific here is because I have plans in the works to actually attempt such a venture in the near future. And as for the "handsome sum" part...well, this is supposed to be the best-case scenario!)
By 2020, I will have turned my attention mainly to philanthropy, perhaps while still consulting/investing on an occasional basis in Silicon Valley. Since joining EVOKE, I have become particularly interested in the problems of energy in developing countries. Although technologies like solar power have already brought much good to Africa and other parts of the developing world, it has its limitations. Surely we can do better. My major philanthropic focus by this time would be bringing clean and sustainable energy to the developing world in forms more efficient than the current paradigm. Bringing efficient and clean fuel cell technology to remote areas, coupled with renewables like wind and solar, could light up much of sub-Saharan Africa, and even rural areas in India and China, for the very first time. My great hope is that I might one day have the chance to make this scenario come true, so that I'll be truly ready for social innovation when Alchemy calls me to Tokyo.
