A crash course in changing the world.
A marathon of marathons: swimming for water!
It is the year 2020, and in designated countries around the world, crowds of people are gathered around swimming pools. This is because a marathon of swimming marathons is about to begin. And the aim of these marathons? Well the people taking part are swimming for water of course!
The idea here is that just as people cannot swim if there is no water, people cannot survive if there is no water. The aim of these marathons is to convey this fact to the rest of the world.
The details of the event are as follows: Before World Water day takes place, olympic swimmers will be approached and asked whether they would be willing to 'buy a swimming lane' and to swim for an hour. Once every lane of every pool in the designated countries have been 'bought' by an olympic swimmer, the public are then called on to buy into a lane of their choice and to swim for an hour. So for example, the South African swimmer Penny Heynes, could buy into a lane and that lane will become 'The Penny Heynes Lane'. Then any person who wants to swim in the Penny Heynes lane could then 'buy into' the lane and then swim for an hour for the Penny Heynes team. Since it is a 24 hour event, each lane must have enough entrants so that a total of 24 hours worth of swimming, will be swum within each lane. At the end, the 'team' that swam the most lengths in 24 hours in each country can then choose which communities will benefit from the money raised. This money will be used to provide clean water to these communities who do not have water. Each marathon will begin when the clock strikes twelve marking the beginning of March 24th in that country! The event will be televised around the world.
