And I am in a small town south of Austin,TX. I am celebrating the 7th anniversary of the opening of the Little Theater, a small community theatre specifically purposed for devised youth theatre. Over the past seven years, we have produced over 25 pieces of devised theatre, created by the kids for the community.
At this theatre we give the kids a sense of community and a sense of purpose. We had our failures in the early years but mostly we have been marked with success. In this seventh year celebration, I am about to announce that we have successfully raised enough money to start a scholarship for the students who have been crucial in the success of our productions. Its not much but its a start.
At tonight's celebration the kids have devised a production about the respect of women. It has been wonderful to watch these students, especially the boys, change their ways of thinking. It can be seen in the words they use, their actions, even the way they relate to each other.
We have created family.
The kids wrap up their production and are in the midst of the bows when my phone rings. With a knowing look I am ready to go. This isn't the first time.
I look at my 16 year old stage manager.
"This is your good news."
I give him my notecards and tell him to give the speech.
"You're their leader now."
I walk out, knowing my family is in good hands.
