Do the hard work needed to find a simple solution. As Leonardo da Vinci said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”—and it is the key to this type of design work.
When it comes to design there are no words truer than these. As a member of an African American fraternity, my organization has a philosophy that is summed up in what is called the 12 Inch Rule. The 12 Inch Rule are twelve things a member of the fraternity should measure themselves by. Number eleven of the 12 Inch Rule is Dignity of Simplicity. By keeping things simple you can get the most buy in from those who will use it. If you are designing a machine, one that is simple is easiest to maintain and repair. As an engineer I have learned that the majority of the cost for a product is in maintenance. If you make it simple and easy to maintain they you have lowered your overall costs.
