Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

LEARN1: Communication is the beginning of any great idea

Over reading over the social Social Innovation Tips, I think my favourite one is Innovate on existing platforms.
I think with that I would add, with existing social networks.
What is already there is so critically important, because it is those things that are changed, re-used, recreated, and built from existing resources that create a sustainable impact over a period of time.
Importing ALL of a particular resource isn't viable over the long term, cost and reliability on other systems (be it a different government, company or other system) is not as stable as the guaranteed items that are already present in a community.

The existing network part is really about that a group of people who has faced a particular problem has thought about the problem. They have tried things, they have wondered about solutions. Listening, understanding, asking questions and seeing the existing social network as a tool and pool of knowledge is important to understand 1) the impact of the problem 2) the scope of the problem 3) attempted solutions to the problem 4) progress about the problem. Existing Social Networks give you the personal stories, the trials, the triumphs of any community, and allow for the discovery of hidden problems. Also, Social Networks can help one learn of others, connect to unknown resources and begin to create a stronger force for change.

You get it!

I hope EVOKE will be all about using existing material as well as creating new. Using existing networks, tapping into them, as well as creating its own universe, its own arena. Remember that the first stage of EVOKE has a limited timespan - untill May. We have ten weeks here. Each week has its own cycle. That alone makes this site interesting, to me. Different. It is not just another social network. But it is something which is created for a few specific purposes, and after a certain amount of time, things change, a new phase begins. We dont know quite what happens then, besides what the EVOKE blog has written already, but we do know that these ten weeks will be as exciting as we allow them to be.

I think everyone agrees that we should use existing models, so go ahead, link to existing social networks that you find interesting. Me - I was active on a website called 'Taking IT Global' from 2001-02.

I have made friends on that site from around the world, friendships that are still alive today, years later.

What we need is more open standards for data transfer. We need less walled gardens (Facebook is a very walled garden), and more open networks. But I guess that is a different discussion. Or is it?

I don't think it is...

Social Networks are limited, but it some ways, and for some problems that is important! Imagine a social network of everyone while working on a particular issue of malaria prevention. Well, there are ALL kinds of other problems too- and by opening the social network too big- you loose the depth that is required to really tackle the issue.

Personally- I don't like face-book (not a member). But, for the audience it reaches and the problems of that audience ( say rising higher ed education costs in the US) facebook is a powerful alliance tool!

Currently, I'm using google Buzz... its new so the social network is kind of small; but I'm hoping it will grow :) Of course, with the internet only time will tell.

It's all about longevity, and what happens after the ten weeks are up. I think it's a foregone conclusion that many will be excited by what happens while the 'game' is happening. I have hopes for a large, broad network *after*.

Me too. This is all about sustainability... using current resources (people) to create something new!

*applause* IMAGINE if all the related networks got together, focusing on a series of goals... People Power can never be under rated. If we start with what is, we look at what could be, we can make what will be!

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
