Explanation of How Understanding is Key to Innovation

Key Aspect

Following the method of construction, bottom-up, for picking the key aspect of innovation; understanding tops the list.

As humans, we have an incredibly enabling ability called empathy: "understanding of another's feelings:the ability to identify with and understand somebody else's feelings or difficulties." Empathy is the foundation which allows to know what the problem is, at stake, resources available, and the most appropriate way of accomplishing our goal as innovators. To fully empathize and take further steps towards our goal, we must "go to where the action is", "talk to the people"/"Listen to the right people", "Don't fight culture."

If you continue down Mr. Tait's list, you will find he encompa**** the other authors' traits. As you can imagine I agree with his list, and chose his #1 because of how wise his tips are.

Example

A prime example can be taken from my own life. I'm a student at BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology), and when I first moved to Vancouver I required a desk for my apartment. Understanding my situation, by being there and knowing my surrounding resources, I came up with a functional solution:

  • Situation
    • Low on funds (from moving, rent, tuition, and other school supplies).
    • Zero transportation (except public buses and the city's train).
    • Restricted access to any markets (no internet for craigslist).
    • Zero worry about personal image (I am a budding Buddhist).
  • Solution
    • Sourced flat door for free from a neighbour throwing it out (to use as the desk top).
    • Utilized laundry baskets I had just used in my move (to use as desk legs).
Conclusion

  • Thereby, I executed each of Mr. Tait's tips and hopefully showed that understanding is the key:
    • Understanding? my need, desires, and constraints.
    • Think creatively? by picturing my massive 9 ft. desk then apply resource and culture constraints/opportunities.
    • User acceptance? came with how well my new desk accomplished its task (not to mention how well the wood matches my hardwood floors).
    • Deliver value? in a large flat surface for any books, monitors, and my laptop.
    • Sustainability? Free in a consumer society there is a lot of other people's junk out there.
    • Sharing? Learned about my neighbours.
    • Peripheral vision? Sources a bed to sleep on!

Way to repurpose! I'd love it if everything was designed to be more modular and multi-purpose. It's unfortunate, because most of the marketing-type things I read all emphasize that in order to make a successful product it should do one thing well, not a smathering of many things. And that's sort of the exact opposite of a healthy, sustainable economic model for this, right? We'd want things that could serve hundreds of purposes, almost like overlarge lego pieces we could design into our life.

What do you think? Are there other places you could apply this strategy?

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
