When we hear about poverty, hunger, and food insecurity, we might not necessarily think about it being a problem in the United States. However, there are many people who go hungry right here in this country. In 2008, a survey found that 14.6 percent of households in the U.S. had low food security. Many of the states that are considered below food security are in the southern part of the country, including Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, and Oklahoma.
In Contra Costa County, which is where I live currently, there is a total population of 917,970 people. Around 75,000 of these residents are eligible for food stamps but a surprising 48% of these people do not receive the aid that they are entitled to. Whether this is out of embarrassment, or just lack of knowledge it is not known.
I found a pdf article on all of the information about Contra Costa's low food security and what are some ways in which we can help. One item I found interesting said that we should encourage all school officials to make sure that breakfast is offered at the school. Many students are going to school without breakfast, which as we know from research, causes them to be tired and less focused and productive in the classroom. The website also urges residents to write letter of support to get rid of the red tape aspect of the Food Stamp program. This will be a large help in getting people who need food stamps the support they deserve.
