A crash course in changing the world.
To find out about food security in my area, I visited the website http://www.kansasruralcenter.org/security.html where I was shocked to find out that Kansas is tied for the ninth highest state in the United States for people experiencing food security problems. One in eight families in Kansas experiences food insecurity every year. That number goes up drastically for homes with single mothers. One in THREE Kansas homes with single mothers experiences food insecurity. 33%! That's a lot when you think about it.
When food security is mentioned, we all think of people in the poor areas of Africa, Central America, and even South America as those who have no food. We all see commercials on television asking us to donate money and help feed a child: we can do so for just X dollars a month. These are always international children that we see. It's surprising to find out that we don't have to send money that far away--we can find it right here in our local communities.
