A crash course in changing the world.
When most people think of Kansas, they think of farms and tornados (thanks to Wizard of Oz). The important part of these thoughts lie in the tornado...and more specifically, the wind.
Pete Ferrell is a Kansan farmer who is part of the Elk River Wind Project in the Flint Hills of Southeastern Kansas. This is a 150 megawatt wind farm that opened up in 2005. His farm contains 50 of the 100 wind turbines that provide this power.
As of now, only one percent of the electricity in the United States comes from wind-farming; however, the government would like to see that number hit 20 percent in the next 20 years. This will not only boost non-carbon energy sources, but also provide many more jobs in the form of "green collar" jobs.
