A crash course in changing the world.
The secret which I think is most important relates to how people can be expected to react in a pandemic situation. According to epidemiologist Sandro Galea, there are five stages of reaction to a disaster:
1) Self-preservation - people are afraid and seek information in order to help themselves first
2) Group preservation - once people have the information they seek to help others
3) Blame setting - people's emotional responses leads them to figure out who is to blame and to do something about it.
4) Justice seeking - need to take action against the perpetrators
5) Renormalizing - people adapt to the threat
Understanding these reactions is important when trying to figure out how people are going to behave during pandemics. Ideally, in a pandemic situation, people need to adapt to the situation quickly instead of being overwhelmed with panic. Through understanding these five responses, journalists, social innovators and others can provide the information needed during the pandemic, so as to help people to adapt to the situation as quickly as possible.
