Baghdad, March 14, 2020
OFF-PANEL 2
You’re certain they won’t resist?
PANEL B
A sunset panorama of the Baghdad skyline is spread behind the silhouette of the POLITICIAN. His posture indicates that he is deep in thought.
POLITICIANS
Because we need real reform, not political double-speak. Even with the renditions, we’re only weeks away from an election.
OFF-PANEL 2
One of the advisors says, “It’s not just us. Everyone is down in their polling numbers.
POLITICIAN
I cannot lose this election. I will not. My career will be over. My family’s prestige and wealth will be lost.
PANEL C
A wide shot of the Politician’s office. The office is large and very luxurious with an impressive desk (and beautiful artwork). The main feature, though, is the floor-to-ceiling window, and the key light is the setting sun coming through it at an almost horizontal angle. The Politician has turned away from the view and is facing his Advisors, one of whom is bowing nervously.
ADVISOR 1
It’s said the western powers and the multinationals are responsible for the loss of revenue last year. Our media experts are telling the story and the people believe it.
ADVISOR 2
But, if we keep this story, how can we continue doing business and trade with…?
ADVISOR 3
Still the opposition is gaining strength and becoming better organized. There are many who distrust our national television. They have records of the cash exchanges…
PANEL D
Close up on ADVISOR 3. The others are looking at him disapprovingly.
ADVISOR 1
Perhaps we should release prisoners as a show of generosity?
PANEL E
Close up on the Politician, who rubs his beard in concentration.
POLITICIAN
If we release the opposition leaders now, what will they do? Would they have time before the election…?
PAGE 2
PANEL A
We see ADVISOR 2 sitting before a computer, sending a message on the private, encrypted short message network. It is surrounded by a texture of ambient data, and layered on top of a map of Iraq and a red locator dot over Baghdad.
