"If you want to make something 10 times cheaper,
remove 90 percent of the material."
The first thing that I thought about when I read this were politicians. There is way too much politics in politics, it's no wonder nothing can get done in a timely and cost effective manner. Every couple of years we (at least in my country) go to the polls to vote on who is ultimately the best lair. They make this promise and that one, to change this or that or make this better only to find out when they get into office that it is much easier said than done.
If you live in the upper east coast, or anywhere that gets a large amount of snow during this time of the year, chances are you look out your window in the wee hours of the morning and wonder why you are paying taxes if they are not going to plow the street so you can get to work to pay them more taxes?
The educational system in my area is a bust. A bad economy has lead to more and more single parents having to work 2 and sometimes 3 jobs just to make ends meet. This, of course, rests the "parenting" duties on the shoulders of an already over worked teaching community or, and this is true in my city, to no one at all.
The result is we are seeing more kids on the street instead of being at home under the guide of a responsible adult who is making sure that their homework is being completed. The kids, searching for some form of familiar structure, turn to gangs or create hardships on local businesses by ultimately converging inside of their establishment in order to be social.
This lack of "education at home" is setting future generations up for even more hardships. Their lack of education will force them to live the same lives that their parents are working so hard to try and get them out of. It is a "circle of life" that appears to have no ending.
This, of course, will result in future strains on our economy. According to recent figures gathered by the United States Census, the race majorities over the next 60 - 70 years will shift from Caucasians, the current majority, to that of African-Americans and Mexican-Americans, the two races that currently make up the majority of people who are suffering in our educational system.
However, even though everyone in this community can and has acknowledged the educational issue here, and many politicians have been elected locally with education restructuring being their key issue, when it comes time to get a plan together and put it in action there are a large number of hands reaching out to try and get their piece of the funds being allocated towards educational reform. And these aren't just any hands, they are the hands of labor unions, teacher unions, lobbyists and every other big wig who had the power to pressure those with the voting power to turn the proposal down should they not get their way.
Like I said, there is too much politics in politics.
My country was founded on the principal that "WE ARE THE PEOPLE!" and the people have the ultimate power, and that does not mean just at the voting booth. If your participation in EVOKE teaches you anything, let it be that if you want something done right, sometimes it is just better to do it yourself.
Let the lawmakers make the laws, we can handle the rest.
