Okay, here's the deal:
I live in a north facing condo. Living room is not well lit; I'm there right now, looking at my monitor on my desk against the east facing wall. To my left is the balcony door/window -- north facing. Behind me on the west wall, between the couch and cushy-seat I've a standing lamp. Up and to my left, on top of my stereo speaker is a small desk lamp.
Right: Here's how I get more light power--
a) replace brown balcony door curtains with white ones. They will better reflect light, keeping it bouncing through my living room. Combine with
b) replacing desk lamp on stereo speaker with a mirror or two - one facing up, the other angled toward up-facing mirror and the rest of the room (eg 45 degrees pointing downward on top of the other mirror) - capturing light from my other lamp behind me and the kitchen to the south.
Value: less one desk lamp of energy every night;
Means: recapturing light yield from other household sources that will be absorbed into curtains and wall.
