The climate change – one of the major problem in the 21st century – is changing the world. This ongoing process requires a new way of thinking and acting with environmental issues. Consequently, people all around the world need to get the awareness of how they can contribute to protect the environment. In order to reduce our carbon footprint it is important to act globally. Nevertheless, every single person is responsible for the world we’re living in. But do people actually know something about their own opportunities and civic duties to preserve the environment?
I asked people who live in my hometown about concepts or ideas of urban resilience. When I asked them about this topic, everyone just thought about protecting the environment. The current situation – hurricanes, earth quakes or flood disasters – make more people feel concerned about environmental affairs. So they know about the importance of a good public transportation system and they also support new innovative ideas, such as a bicycle rental service within the urban area. That means that every person is able to rent a bicycle for one Euro per hour. In consequence, more people will take their bike instead of the car.
I have also uncovered a few resilience strategies set up by big cities all around the world. The most fascinating strategy is definitely the plan of big cities at the seaside to build up huge walls or barriers in order to be prepared for the increasing sea level caused by the climate warming.
In the next few decades, cities like New York or London have to face new challenges and upcoming disasters will show its true urban resilience.
