"The release of atomic energy has not created a new problem. It has merely made more urgent the necessity of solving an existing one." - Albert Einstein
When I saw the objectives of this particular mission, I immediately thought of three "power players" that i wanted to talk about.
Firstly, the
Sundolier, made by a Boulder-based corporation known as Sunflower, which is essentially a self-powered robotic skylight that can channel light from outside into buildings, providing enough light to light a 2500 sqft area as long as the sun's up. I think this is truly an innovative idea that essentially provides clean energy - it removes the need for energy draining lightbulbs, saving cost to both people and the environment.
Secondly,
Sanyo's solar parking lots for electric bikes, which they installed in Setagaya, Tokyo. The hybrid bikes do most of the work for commuters, and are charged both by the kinetic energy generated by pedaling, as well as the solar parking lots. And they're community bikes, for residents of Setagya to use.
Thirdly, M.I.T. Chemist
Dan Nocera's revolutionary cobalt-based catalyst, which can cheaply split enough water in four hours to store enough energy to power an "average American home" for a day, using just non-potable water and electricity generated by a photovoltaic array.
"And what is a man without energy? Nothing, nothing at all." - Mark Twain =P
