UNRWA stages first Gaza Marathon:
On the 5th Mai 2011 more than 1,400 Palestinians took part in the first-ever UNRWA Gaza Marathon, which runs the entire length of the coastal enclave. The runners have collected more than 1.000.000 $ in sponsorship which will be used for a Summer Games programme for children. Marathons are a good tool to collect donations for projects to help poor people in developing countries. By arranging a marathon the attention can be called to such projects and to abuses in other countries. For this reasons marathons are organized in countries all over the world. In Germany there are for example the
Haspa Marathon in Hamburg to collect money for a drinking water project in developing countries.
Also arises the hope that one day even in countries where women have few rights, women may run in a marathon and get the same rights as men. Perhaps similar events have to pass, such as 1967 at the Boston Marathon, so that the world and other women looks up. Katherine Switzer was the first woman to run the
Boston Marathon in 1967 and men tried to forcefully push her off the track. But she stayed and finished the race.
