Every day, 6,000 girls risk undergoing female genital cutting in countries across Africa, the Middle East and Asia. That's more than 2,000,000 girls annually.
Despite difficulties that can include severe hemorrhaging, infection, complications with intercourse and childbirth, and even death, many communities consider female genital cutting as part of their cultural heritage and a critical rite of passage.
In some parts of Kenya, it is tradition that girls between the ages of 4 and 11
undergo infibulation, one of the most severe forms of female genital cutting. Chelimo, a mother of three, refused to have her daughters cut
because she wanted to protect her daughters from what she states are terrible health problems and pain that often lasts a lifetime.THis has left the family stigmatized and at times suffered physical violence.
