I am a member of a worldwide non-profit organization called Slow Food, I am also on the board of the local chapter serving as the treasurer. One of our national objectives is supporting the Time for Lunch campaign in which we held an event nationwide. This event was a pot luck hosted by each local chapter. We are also working on a school garden project thats get student to do hands on learning while growing food. We hope to work toward the food from these gardens to be incorporated into the cafeteria meals. The main point of this project is to educate kids about sources of the food. We have found that children really enjoy it and are more likey to eat fresh produce if they had a hand it. We have a coomitee for this project here and are putting a lot of effort to get this going. I am personally contributing my knowledge as an organic farmer and am going to work towards making these gardens sustainable.
There has been much concern lately as to the healthiness of food served in school cafeterias. The proplem with making changes to icrease the quaility of the menu is cost. Even raising the cost of a lunch by $0.25 is a staggering amount in the school systems budgeting. Another problem is that vendors have made their ways into the schools. There all sorts of snack machines and even McDonald's started making their way in. They offer kickback percentages to the school. Schools find this favorable financially and let them in. It will be a hard fight to get them out, if there is many chance at all. We actually have to rely on the spendings habits of the kids on this one, guess what their inclinations are. Perhaps one day there will be little to be had from processed food due to lack of demand, people need to evolve socially for that.
So why can't we get into the schools bellies? How? Volunteer supported school gardens. W are doing it right now and you can help too. Checkout the sites below:
