Synopsis: Increasingly academic institutions, governments, nonprofits, and individuals are putting out high quality, free educational material for students from kindergarten to college; however, it can take a great bit of digging and searching to find it even for someone who is web literate. To increase the availability of educational opportunities for anyone with internet access, I hope to create a site through which volunteers can add and index educational resources creating a easy to use database for less web sophisticated educational consumers to locate resources.
Goals: Build a following among more savvy and probably more affluent users who are either homeschooling or supplementing their children's educations. As the depth and strength of the database grows, it will attract more attention from groups that are more likely to be predominantly consumers rather than volunteer consumers. Eventually I'd hope that it would attract enough support to become self-sustaining or to serve as a model that larger organizations might take on as part of their educational mandate.
The question: I've used Joomla some and know that there are other open source web 2.0 platforms out there beyond Joomla, but I don't have enough knowledge or expertise to know the pros and cons of using this vs. that for the project I've described. If anyone out there with more knowledge or wisdom in the tech area has any insights, PLEASE SHARE!
Thanks and cheers, Mark
