Share knowledge and skills to continue the innovative process both to and from people and communities.
I work at a university-based student-run volunteer organisation, where people are appointed to leadership positions for one academic year.
So continuity is a problem.
My solution: share.
Sharing knowledge, skills and experience starts on the one end with transparency and openness, and on the other involves active communication to ensure the message is conveyed. This full spectrum of sharing is needed.
Successful sharing would mean:
1) Improved continuity, because new leadership would not have to re-learn as much every year
2) Increased innovation through consultation, because sharing with others (student leadership and communities) empowers more voices to contribute meaningfully
3) Less duplication of work ("if somebody already invented it, you don’t have to")
The problem of continuity is greatly exaggerated in the microcosm of our organisation. We cannot ignore it, because it has immediate impact on our year-to-year functioning.
It is not as apparently problematic in the big wide world, but I suspect that applying these principles to human collaboration in a greater way would lead to similar outcomes on a much larger scale.
Sharing is caring.
