I chose to contact and research an extremely interesting concept called
TerraPowerThis is a project from
Intellectual Ventures which I am supprised not many people have heard of. They are developing technology that would literally revolutionise the way we get our electrical energy
one of their facinating projects is called
Terrapower, and looks at
using nuclear waste as an energy source. This works by getting a small amount of enriched uranium, and starting a chain reaction within the waste. The nuclear waste then changes form, and releases it's stored potential energy, and then continues the reaction. The controlled reaction can make electricity for
60 YEARS before it needs replacing. Not only that, the cores can basically be left to do their thing after its started.
This will use up the huge amount of nuclear waste that currently sits in storage, which has a chance of leaking, or being stolen for dirty bombs.
I contacted Intellectual Ventures, who stated
TerraPower is a long-term project, and they
expect their first
reactor to be operational by 2020 approximately and commercial designs
will
become available later that decade (between 2020 and 2030). The team is
currently focused on testing materials that would be used in the final
design.
This is some very exciting stuff!
They also have a
Malaria Project which shoots down
mosquitos with high powered lasers which are controlled by an advanced computer system. This could be used in areas such as rural India, where Malaria rates are higher in the world.
Intellectual ventures- they are definately worth following!
