The Social Innovator that I've chosen to shadow is Alex Steffen, Executive Editor and Co-Founder of Worldchanging.com. I have been following Alex and his work for at least three years through many sources:
One of the reasons I follow Alex's work so closely is to keep an eye on information and solutions for the issues that I do not touch through my work so that I never lose sight of the bigger picture. My introduction to the social development was when I worked at the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, but since then my work has rarely touched on environmental sustainability issues. I firmly believe that the world issues we face are inextricably linked and we often forget this reality when we only concentrate on one area of social innovation. Alex actually tweets it much better than I can express it:
We keep designing simple, silo-ed solutions to address aspects of an
interconnected, complex problem, then complaining nothing's working.
With insights like that, Alex is an easy choice for shadowing, So here
is another quote describing his work:
"We find ourselves facing two futures, one unthinkable and the other
currently unimaginable," says Steffen, "My beat is looking for ways to
create a future which is sustainable, dynamic, prosperous and fair -- a
future which is both bright and green. WorldChanging is based on the
premise that such a future is not a distant possibility, but a growing
reality. We seek to connect worldchanging people with the tools, models
and ideas for building it."
