Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

To borrow from one of Jane McGonigal's previous games, most of the secrets from the Design in Africa post contained the idea of Superstruct. We must build on what is there, be it cultural value, infrastructure or market forces, if you want to change something, you have to add value within the structures or platforms that exist. Traditional charity fail because they deliver finished products, not skills, they create need, not education. In order to create sustainable improvement, you must develop solutions that are enabled by the people affected with their resources, values and knowledge.

The other side of the coin, however, is that group thinking can limit possibilities. Groups focused on problems and limitations slip into stagnation. People battling hunger become so immersed in the barriers of daily function that feeding people can prevent solving the issues that lead to those people becoming hungry. We have to reach beyond the traditional networks to find new sources of innovation. Take hunger workers and mix them with farmers, engineers and artists, and a wh*** new world of possibilities can be seen.

Examples of this kind of collaboration are emerging everywhere:

  • Youth Village Foundation is combining farmers, animal rescue groups and technology organizations with youth in county detention centers to solve issues with troubled youth and other social issues in their communities.
  • Ashoka solves problems around the world with social innoators or all stripes.
  • Social Venture Partners International focuses an organization in a region on the issues of that area by building engaging local partners from many walks of life to focus on the issues of that region.
I stole these from my wife out of laziness, but I read about these every day. What are some organizations or movements you've seen lately?

Great idea to mix people in a way that there are so different that it seem like all that is left for them to do with each other is learn. (farmers... and youth in county detention centers).
Thanks

"We have to reach beyond the traditional networks to find new sources of innovation." This is some of the most insightful I have read on this site yet. Looking forward to reading more!

The key to superstructing is to find the inputs and outputs of different things, and match the needs of one group up with the byproducts of another. I talk about this in my blog post here: http://www.urgentevoke.com/profiles/blogs/what-do-you-have-what-do-you

There are some GREAT ideas at TED.com. My favorites include Biomimicry by Janine Benyus, Willie Smits Restores a rainforest...and many, many more.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
