Installing or providing a widget that happens to provide a solution to a problem without also providing training and skills regarding how that device works, how to recognize when it is broken, and how to fix it...will result in being right back where you started should anything go wrong. And let's face it, something is probably going to go wrong at some point.
With a bit more foresight and planning, you can provide the widget AND teach people how to maintain it, repair it, and potentially even build a new one. Whereas without such training you're left with a single point of failure (the widget) and a bunch of end-users who only know what do do with the widget when it is functional.
Skills and insight have a wonderful ability to spread from their point of origin and into new areas. Training someone to troubleshoot Problem A has a darn good chance of contributing to that person being able to troubleshoot Problem Z on their own, long after you are gone.
