A crash course in changing the world.
I've found several examples for alternative ways of payment or rather complementary currencies.
One of this complementary currencies is "The Yamato Love Machine".
I must admit that it didn't sound too reputable when i first read the description.
If i haven't informed myself about the project, i would have probably associated all sorts of things
with "The Love Machine" but definitely not a currency.
So that you will not be facing the same fate as me, I'll briefly illustrate the functionality of "The Yamato Love Machine".
- A local electronic currency based on credit cards.
- Cards are given to residents, each with 10,000 monetary units called ‘love’ already encoded.
- The loves can be used in exchange for discount at local shops or to buy second-hand goods advertised on the city government’s website.
- Loves can be earned in return for voluntary social welfare activities, advertised on the website.
Additionaly, "Love" can be interchanged between other local currencies.
Onother example for an complementary currency is the Ithaca Hours.
Developed and introduced in New York, it serves for over 900 participants as a
local currency system that promotes local economic
strength and community self-reliance in ways which will support
economic and social justice, ecology, community participation and
human aspirations in and around Ithaca, New York.
Finally, a couple of some interesting figures.
Did you know that 1.3 trillion U.S. Dollar are traded in foreign exchange
markets every day.
That's 100 times more than the trading volume of all the stockmarkets of the world
combined and only 3% of these foreign exchange transactions relate to real goods and services.
That means 97% of the foreign exchange transactions are purely speculative.
Did you know that due to the revolution of information in the past 30
years the World 500 increased production and sales 700% whilst reducing total workforce.
=> nowadays about 1 billion people worldwide are chronically unemployed.
