A crash course in changing the world.
This week I have chosen to look at “The Water Project”, which is a wide spread project that aims to provide ways
to access to clean safe water for lesser advantaged communities the world
over.“The Water Project funds both the technical assistance and supplies needed
for communities to build wells, small dams, rain catchment systems and/or water
filters.” (The Water Project)
I like this project because of its diversity in many ways. Firstly it does not simply stick to one continent, it
gives the water assistance where it is needed, as well also allowing its
donators to choose where their money goes, if they wish. It also does not just
focus on one type of water distribution, it tailors the type of water access to
each community’s needs, for example in most cases wells are the most needed,
and practical, however, in some communities water catchment areas or simple water
purification mechanisms are all that’s needed. The Water Project is not
entirely unique, as there are many projects of its kind all over, however I
think this is wonderful news as the poorer parts of the world need it so
desperately, and the more groups like this that they have working for them the
better. Death due to water related issues is a very serious issue that we need
to take very seriously, and the fact that it is being addressed by many groups
is a very positive thing. However, as water is a common humanitarian right that
everyone on earth is entitled to, we need to make more effort to solve the
water crisis faced by so many. The Water Project’s main focus however is wells,
the building of them and repairing of them in the most cost effective ways
possible, by trying to keep it to $10 per person they can ensure that,
depending on the cost of the building of the well, and its capacity, each
person in given community will have water for 10 years. The other thing that
drew me to this project, as well as inspired me, was that it involves local
partners, from NGOs to actually involving the community who will be benefiting
from it, so that they as the people end up having a vested interest in the
well/weir/catchment that they build and then live off.
I felt inspired by this project’s modesty and practicality, the fact that it gets straight to the point of what
it is all about, and that it explains very well what it does, that is, the
wells/water catchment/water purification, and it gives the option of where your
money/time will be going to. A lot of these kinds of organizations don’t actually
say what they do with the money, they just say it’s going to give water to
communities in need, which it does name, but a lot of the time they never say
how, which is very frustrating, and leaves people doubting.
The Water Project is an amazing development, and I hope that they carry on doing the wonderful work that they
are doing now, through donations as well as volunteering and keeping the people
of the world inspired through their practical and modest way of informing and
giving.
