When you talk about money, as has been stated before, you talk about something that has value because people give it value. It's important to understand that currencies exist in part because of that psychological value, and cannot exist without it. So, in a hypothetical currency crisis where the dollar becomes nearly worthless, what has value?
I've asked myself this to try to intelligently place myself on the right side of the line that is destroying the middle class here in America. But from the perspective of Africans, the situation is already dire. So you have to ask yourself "what has universal value" and "what has value to Africans?"
On the universal front, the only answers one can easily derive are gold and land. Without the dollar, gold and real estate have value, and the people who hold these, not dollars, control the wealth. However, gold is another example of psychological value. Given enough time, every currency that has ever existed has become worthless, except gold. But it's not the rarest metal, not the shiniest or prettiest, but it has psychological financial demand, and therefore value. So real estate, and maybe gold, have universal value. The problem is, these are very expensive, so the key to the future of money for Africans will be the continued push towards microtransactions.
Micro-investments, where you can own a fraction of an ounce of gold, or a few square feet of land, in tandem with others in your community. This will ensure that the wealth of an community, as measured in possessions, grows independent of a currency system. The wealth of the community as measured in hope, vision, and the sense of community and support, will grow as well. This, in theory, will yield measurable positive results.
Other valuable assets to Africans are food and water. We take these things for granted here. In the future, why not let a community of locals, through a series of microtransactions, own a water desalination plant or milk processing plant, instead of just working there for miniscule wages?
The trends of microtransactions will continue, and people who never thought they could actually own anything of "value" will find themselves partial owners of appreciating assets, and as a bonus, appreciating esteem.
