As a kid I remember dreaming in comic book form before I ever picked up a graphic novel. The muscular bodies in tights from television would speak to me at night and give me secret messages. When my 5 year old self needed courage she dreamt of Superman flying and Alan Alda playing with electricity as Hawkeye Pierce from M.A.S.H. As I grew into myself and learned to deal with the pain and horror of life more directly the concept of a physically perfect savior seemed less true and real than the heroes I encountered every day.
Today I have learned to "follow" many of my heroes and some are now friends.
@christinasworld @leila_c from @samasource @webb and the @techsoup stars
@chatcat @nurturegirl @itsthomas @pamomidyar @lovisatalk @biancachavez
I could list a hundred easily....perhaps in future missions. It's taken me five years to find these extraordinary evocative leaders and I'm very happy to share them with you. Each of these heroes has their own spin on social entrepreneurship and international outreach that's balanced, compassionate and resourceful in a way that is needed in our work.
The best thing about this network of heroes is that we have our alter egos, our everyday faces. We are sometimes able just to rest and enjoy each others company. We listen to each other and care about the other. Sometimes the best idea is silence and careful patience to grow a relationship with roots. Heroes are typically very intelligent people who sometimes carry a very heavy heart.....we all need friends to feel with, to trust and share our journeys.
Sadly there are four Alan Alda wannabes on Twitter but no sign of the real one. Yet. There's always the next mission!
