A crash course in changing the world.
Renewable energy sources do not have to mean electricity. Winrock International have been working to develop and demonstrate a solar banana dryer that is economically and financially viable and an income generating application of renewable energy that can be financed and replicated in communities in northeast Brazil.
In the small community of Nova Esperança ("New Hope"), in the eastern Brazilian state of Bahia, the main source of income is banana production. Unfortunately, the 90 families who live here (about 25 miles by dirt road from the nearest town), receive almost nothing for their crops. In fact, the phrase "for the price of bananas" in Portuguese is equivalent to the English term "dirt cheap." In city markets, bananas sell for more than ten times the price that the farmer receives from the middleman. Adding value to the banana crop would increase incomes and improve the quality of life for the people of Nova Esperança, which the Bahian government has designated as one of the poorest communities in the state.
