According to an article written January 14, 2009, from ifex.org. A female journalist was murdered in Terai, Nepal. The woman was also a women's rights activist. On January 11 she was attacked by a gang of about 15 men armed with the traditional curved knives of Nepal called "khukhuris".
the gang bursth into her apartment that she rented in Janakpur and stabbed her repeatedly in front of the other tenants. She died on her way to a hospital in Kathmandu, she had bled to death.
Some of the tenants has said "We heard her cry out but were afraid to go to her help" Other's said "We locked the doors and stayed inside." The woman's name was Uma, she like so many others are constantly under threat.Beatings, and death treats are not uncommon. Women journalists in Dhanusa demanded official protection in october 2008, claiming that dozens had been forced to quit after threats from armed groups.
The Janakpur offices of the Terai Times were also attacked and staff assaulted on October 20 after the paper published articles alleging the Maoist's youth branch, the Young Communist League, was involved in local criminal activities, according to local and international news reports.
"It is a big problem working in the Terai region," Singh told the U.N. Mission in Nepal during an interview last year, which is available on YouTube. "Society doesn't accept [women] with equal perspectives. They say the work we have been doing is not good." She also described pressures from local organizations and armed groups. "If we don't air the news of their choice, they threaten us with killing," she said. But, she said, she and her colleagues did not bow to their orders. "We also have to balance our news."
Now on to the good news: "25 women journalists from the Terai region of Nepal will be trained on personal security, human rights, basic journalism skills, and conflict and gender-sensitive journalism. UNESCO and the Nepal Press Institute, which organized this training, hope that it will help women journalists protect themselves and will reduce the amount of violence against them."
This is only a start though, more needs to be done to protect women journalists all over the world. These cla**** may help but they are not readily available to everyone yet and these women will not be able to protect themselves from armed mobs. What do you do? Perhaps the internet and ghost journalism would help protect these journalists in the future. ... What do you think?
