A crash course in changing the world.
I choose to shadow a person whom I think is a local hero because she lives in my own town. Cynthia Belwana runs a soup kitchen which operates from the Xolani township here in Grahamstown. The Masincedane Soup Kitchen feeds over 100 people a day, making it one of Grahamstown’s most successful food programmes. With the aid and support of the Rhodes University’s Masincedane society and other various donors around Grahamstown, Cynthia Belwana has been able to run the soup kitchen from her own home.
Cynthia Belwana as an unemployed mother with very little income has dedicated her time and her home to help those in need. For me this goes to prove that anyone whose is willing to make a difference no matter how small it is; can actually make it by helping their very own neighbors. I believe that to be a successful social innovator starts from your own home and your own community.
