New York Wind Turbines
Okay so I had this thought. The winds that travel in between skyscrapers in big cities much reach colossal speeds, these winds could be used to generate energy. So why not install wind turbines in big cities? Here's a small render I made:
Noise; from what I've heard wind turbines can be quite noisy, something that big cities usually have enough of.
Accidents; Wind turbines a prone to break when the winds get to high. Turbines can break and scatter parts. This would of course be extremely dangerous in big cities if people live or travel near them.
But if they were installed in places where people don't travel, like in secluded alleys, with some kind of protection around them, it might be safe.
Thoughts?
Random afterthought: 3 dimensional wind turbines? Hang them on an axis and the could turn with the wind, like a flag hanging on a flagpole. => More efficient turbines?

Hey! I forgot about kite generators! Imagine putting kites on the highest buildings in New York! But what's good about my idea is that the wind gets pushed between buildings and should therefore achieve higher speeds, I think. :P

Why can't kites go between buildings? You've got poles sticking out from the sides of buildings, just replace the fan blades with a kite. Each kite generator comes with a computer that controls the kites motion to the nanosecond, set the limits and the kite will not be flying into buildings.

I think its a great idea. Large buildings also generate their own thermals, so maybe skyscrapers could have turbines sticking out parallel to the ground. The sound isn't necessarily a bad thing, its all how this are perceived--think the sound of sustainability. In terms of them breaking apart and killing people, yeah that's a problem. The kites are a great idea, maybe an alternative to turbines?

Neat idea. Chicago, "The Windy City" would also be a prime target for this sort of energy generation.
And why not solar on top of the buildings or some sort of way to catch heat being absorb and then radiated by all that concrete?

Great idea and rendering! I have walked down many city streets and the wind power is formidable. There must be materials and engineering to make this a real possibility - I would definitely pursue it!

I think using the urban heat island effect as thermal wind generation is brilliant. You don't have to worry about birds if you use Vertical Axis Wind Turbines. These look like VAWTs turned on their side...

The meal
