So, I am completing these missions out of order but I have to share this story with you, assuming you haven't discovered this yet.
His name is William Kamkwamba. When his village crops started dropping in yield his family began to starve. It seems that the climate had indeed changed, an all to common story, so much so that plants would not grow. William refused to accept this and he went to his local library and studied books on physics and electricity, keeping in mind that he could not read english, instead he used the diagrams and reversed engineered enough meaning from them to understand the schematic for a basic wind generator.
At the age of 14 he built a windmill for his village in Malawi out of a bicycle, wood, pvc pipes, tractor fan, an old bicycle light dynamo... and it worked. The electricity it generated was enough to power 4 incandescent light globes and 2 radios. He then built a second windmill to irrigate and increase crop yield... and it worked as well. The impact of these inventions have made a profound difference to his village.
A few things...
Williams story demonstrates a clear example of how far reaching the implications are of climate destabilisation. A teacher did make the point that climate change itself is not a bad thing, it happens anyway. What our world is currently experiencing is climate destabilisation, and as evoke has already covered, this is compromising our most fundamental ingredient for living... Food.
But this is a story of hope and creativity, even in crisis. Whilst enduring starvation, a 14 year old boy sees something possible, a dream to make a difference to his community. With outright refusal to give up, he creates something, more than just a windmill, he creates inspiration.
This guy is the bomb. and you ... yes you who is reading this.... you have no idea what you are capable of.
