Urgent Evoke

A crash course in changing the world.

Why is more always better? It seems today that in our society here in North America, we are always looking for things that "do more". The more features or gadgets an item has, the more value we seem to perceive in that item. Our vehicles, homes, electronics, appliances .... just about anything we own, are all marketed based on having more and more features, most of which we will never use. We say we want simplicity, but we will only look for it when the simplicity is packaged as "easy to use" rather than performing one function well without all the bells and whistles.

Here is an idea. What if dropped our feature laden, "easy to use" technologies for simpler, more efficient ones that left a smaller footprint from a resource point of view. What if we kept to the truly simple things that make life more serene rather than the technologies that simply allow us to do more? Could we even now do without many of the things that we perceive as connecting us and yet seem to allow us to drift farther apart? I am not sure we could. What I am sure is that it would be interesting to see what would happen if enough of us gave it a try.

not only do we look for things that 'do more' we also look for things in smaller and smaller sizes that cost far more... I know for a fact that my grandfather has a far better grasp on his desk top computer than my laptop - simplicity may be fast becoming a past idea... small and complicated seems to be the new design code.

If we can design smaller devices that hold more than their larger competition why can't we design things the same size that are more beneficial for our environment? I'm sure that would use just as much money as micro-sizing everything =)

What I'm trying to say is I agree with your opinion - very nice blog I enjoyed reading it very much =)

I completely agree Drew! I believe this idea of more is better come (at least in part) from the economic perspective that if you have more you have more options so you can discard those that doesn´t fit you. The bad thing is that thanks to that we now have lots of options we don´t need and yet we have to pay for them (either with money or using valuable natural resources).

I think, as you say, that we should use our development to get simpler and better things. Furthermore I think we should try to do some mind switch to try to live a simpler life. I find so happy with myself as now I don´t have a car and I try to keep my mind and my needs as simple as possible. As a result I just don´t save more money than my friends but I'm also way more relaxed as I started to care about less things (which in turns helps me to care better about the few things I really think are important)

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development.The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
