Indigenous Knowledge - ACT

EVIDENCE TAG:
ACT8
STATUS:

Become a guardian for an indigenous secret.

The more people who share a piece of wisdom, the more likely it is to survive. You can help an indigeneous community share its wisdom about the local environment, by creating a special knowledge object that can endure over time.

Your mission this week: Create a real physical object that encodes a piece of traditional wisdom about the local plants, animals, landforms, water sources, weather, or any other important feature of an indigenous environment.

This physical object will encode the information for people who don't have access to digital media today -- or for future generations who may not be able to access the forms of digital media that we use now. (The same way today most people don't have the tools to access knowledge stored on VHS videotapes or record albums.)

The object should be constructed from durable materials, like wood, metal, stone or plastic, and handheld, so that it might be passed on from one person to another. By making a physical "knowledge object", you're ensuring that a piece of oral wisdom is preserved for future generations.

Whose secret will you guard?
There are hundreds of indigenous communities around the world, from the Namaqua in South Africa and the Nuu-chah-nulth in the Pacific Northwest, to the Tukano in Colombia and the Puyuma in Taiwan. Each has its own traditional wisdom to pass on to future generations, or other cultures.

Where can you search for a secret?
Here are few ideas... you can also search the Internet for the name of your community followed by the terms "traditional knowledge", "environmental knowledge", or "indigenous knowledge."

Your objective:

Choose an indigenous secret and doc**ent it in a real, PHYSICAL OBJECT - made out of durable material like wood, metal, stone or plastic. Upload a photo or video of your object as evidence of your successful mission. In the caption, describe the object -- and explain why you chose this secret to help pass on to other cultures, and to future generations. Why is it an important piece of information? Who do you think would benefit from knowing it, and how?

This objective is worth +50 creativity.

I would create a few small boxes and have different climates in each one and find the most efficient, best-vauled, and effective way of farming in each of the continents land capacities and soil type.

Comment by Elizabeth Ordway on October 23, 2013 at 12:06am

everyone should have their own crops so that they can learn to survive more on their own.

Comment by Eric Connor Lieberman on December 14, 2012 at 12:06pm

I would have a small garden that people have rotated crops on so the don't have to slash and burn.

Comment by Hal Olson on December 12, 2012 at 2:56pm

I would have a small sphere, and inside the sphere would be information on how to best use the soil in your area. This would include what to plant, when to plant, and how to keep the precious soil fertile and usable.

I think that where you live affects everything. If you live somewhere wet, fertile, warm, and sunny, you will probably grow crops or invest in agriculture

Climate controls pretty much everything in an ecosystem. It affects where you live, what job you have, etc.

Comment by Jacky Martinez on December 1, 2012 at 2:43am

climate can affect many things. it can affect from where you live, what job you are going to have to, what you are going to eat.

I would create a small device consisting of a handle and three disks on the top that can be twisted in certain patterns to unlock a small chamber on the bottom that contains papers holding the secrets of this time. It contains techniques and skills such as "using of the hoodia cactus to stave off hunger"

Climate is a gigantic part in life. It controls who lives where and what can be done in an area.

Comment by Peter Thomas Duncan on November 30, 2012 at 3:24am
Climates mainly affect the environment around them. It changes the food on how healthy it is and what it will taste like. It also affects how an animal lives.
Comment by Brian Hill on November 30, 2012 at 2:57am

The climate affects things such as where people are, causing someone to be in the right place in the right time and vice versa.

Comment by Sydney Koeneman on November 30, 2012 at 2:36am

Climate is a huge part of life. It controls what crops can be grown and what jobs are available.

Comment by Joshua Bennafield on November 30, 2012 at 12:14am
One indiginous secret is climate change. It controls the amount of food that can be grown, the variety of food,,and also the animals in the environment. In addition, it can change they way people get from place to place and how...

Climate can change a big part of life! If it changes it effects the fruits and veggies people eat, resources can be damaged, and sometimes even unemploy someone.

Comment by Martha Wilber on November 29, 2012 at 11:25pm

ONe indeginous secret is that climate change can affect how much money you make, where, you live, and the diseases of thtat area

Comment by Ellie Addington on November 29, 2012 at 10:58pm

The climate can change everything in an area! Climates change what people eat, the jobs people do and it can even control viruses and diseases that arise in an area.

Comment by Lauren Keen on November 29, 2012 at 10:25pm

Climate is a major one because it effects what resources are available: therefore, effecting where people live and what they do for a living.

Comment by Grant Reeder on November 29, 2012 at 10:11pm

Climate affects many people in Africa and other continents. Take a look at the Sahara. The Sahara has little to no fertile land and it causes many people to leave while those that stay as nomads could die from heat.

Comment by Camille Grout on November 29, 2012 at 9:57pm

Climate can cange where people work live and what they eat or do. climate can change an entire terortoriy if the climate changes

Comment by Adileni Maldonado on November 29, 2012 at 8:53pm

Climate can affect many things- people, their way of life, what they eat, and much much more.

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
