LEARN2 Indigenous Food Sovereignty in Canada

When I started to research food security in Canada, I was immediately attracted to the issue of Indigenous Food Sovereignty.

Since the time of colonization, Indigenous communities have witnessed a drastic decline in the health and integrity of Indigenous cultures, ecosystems, social structures and knowledge systems which are integral

to our ability to respond to our own needs…

Greenspace and farmland in Detroit

Interesting story on transforming Detroit.

Detroit looks at downsizing to save city

Detroit, the very symbol of American industrial might for most of the 20th century, is drawing up a radical renewal plan that calls for turning large swaths of this now-blighted, rusted-out city back into

the fields and farmland that existed before the…

IMAGINE1 Creating change in 2020

Yesterday was a day to celebrate. We have just published our 5000th book.

In 2012 I create a small organization with a group of people whose interests intersected. Cultural preservation, education, literacy, social innovation, anthropology, information science, arts, sociology, hackerculture, we came from a variety of backgrounds and professions. Tired of the walls that kept us confined in narrow interests, we wanted to do transdisciplinary work and take action for positive… Continue

Achieving your aims through obliquity

Found an interesting article on achieving one's goal using a principle called obliquity that I thought may be of interest. A good principle to use in situations involving high complexity and uncertainty. Sound familiar?

Obliquity describes the process of achieving objectives indirectly, such as the financial success that comes from a real commitment to…

ACT1 Shadowing a hero, Bunker Roy

I have chosen Bunker Roy, founder of Barefoot College as my hero. What is Barefoot College? Well...

The College takes men, women and children who are illiterate and semi-literate from the lowest castes, and from the most remote and inaccessible villages in India, and trains them at their own pace to become "barefoot" water and solar engineers, architects, teachers, communicators, pathologists, midwives, IT…

LEARN 1 Importance of culture in social innovation

Don’t fight culture (If people cook by stirring their stews, they’re not going to use a solar oven, no matter what you do to market it. Make them a better stove instead.)

1. If, as Clifford Geertz says, culture is simply the ensemble of stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, then we have to understand others stories to participate in them.…

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
