Food security - imagine...

Where are you?

Still in Lagos

Who are you eating with?

With family, on occasion with the neighbours, hardly, if ever, anywhere else.

Where did your food come from? How did you get it?

Bought fruit and veg locally and from a nearby market. Chances are it's been brought down from the North of the country - no change there. Food production in…

We plough the fields...

Whenever I think of that line, I'm reminded of a scene from "Curse of the Were Rabbit", when the vicar is lovingly poring over his prize veg for the upcoming show.

We don't have fields, but we have space. And to that end, I decided to do some planting. My sister-in-law brought some seeds, Mr did the digging, I planted, watered and weeded.

My intentions were good. The crops were coming up nicely and then...it rained. And rained. And rained some more. Then the dogs decided… Continue

Urban Resilience or just existence?

So we're talking about a city where it is estimated the could potential exceed 20 million by 2020.

The problem is, there is no strategy or plan, inasmuch as the current state governor, Babatunde Fashola, has been doing since his tenure started in 2007. In fact, it would be safe to say that he has done more for the city than previous governors barring Jakande in the 80s.

The city, in short, is overcrowded. It is not unreasonable to expect to be stuck in a traffic jam on the… Continue

City Living

For the first time in well over a year, I can finally submit something to my blog!

Let me set the scene; I'm in a neighbourhood with badly eroded dirt roads, which means during the rainy season the roads are difficult to navigate. The nearest petrol stations remain closed for 2 months because vehicles cannot traverse the road It was so bad in one place that a petrol station was flooded in - you had to shortcut through another petrol station to get into town. The local council (LCDA)… Continue

Somewhere down the road

"There is nothing new under the sun". One thing I've always tried to do was not think too far ahead in the future. I'm not a futurologist, but I do have foresight. I can't predict the future, but I do have an uncanny way of seeing how things will eventually evolve and what the end result will be.

Personally, I suspect that I will be firmly esconced in my new environ. I would have picked up some of the language and learned to mimic the locals very well :) Yup, I'm good like… Continue

The catalyst

I'm in the airport in the early hours of the morning, travelling along the concourse to Customs. The first smell that hits me, is not the usual earth/clay burning wood smell that I've noticed before, but the smell of diesel. Then there's the noticeable, slightly whirring noise in the background.

Then we're at the house. During the day it isn't noticeable, but at night the noise of the generator is so loud I can't hear the television. I begin to notice that, despite getting loads of… Continue

Everything has a beginning

Life has always presented interesting challenges, and I have been very fortunate to have lived in a number of countries in my lifetime. A week from today will bring about another change.

But for now, the things that stands out from this list are:

Understand the culture and environment that people live in.

Listen to…

"I love that you've brought this to attention. An extensive database of uncommon but resistant and hardy plants/foods could be developed and organized by climate. Ease of growth and processing should also be taken in to account. I will try to…"

Fourth of July on the Lake

This past weekend was the annual celebration at the lake house in Connecticut. It is amazing that the lake is still so clear and beautiful after all these years. The watershed association has done a wonderful job protecting these waters from the damaging effects of development. The wood grill was finally ready to cook on, so we didn't miss the propane tank fueled grill anymore. The food actually tasted fresher than in the past and was easy to keep fueled.Dad was very proud of the solar hybrid…See More

Stinging Nettle

In this blog post I will focus on a plant that is abundant in our nature, and which is immensely nutritious. It's of course the Stinging Nettle. Let's start with the chemical constituents of this plant:37 % Non-Nitrogen-Extracts19 - 29 % Ash9 - 21 % Fiber4 % Fat22 % ProteinOnce the leaves are drid, their protein content can reach an astounding 40 %, which is much higher than beef, which even under the best of circ**stances can never exceed 31 % protein. In addition the Stinging Nettle consists…See More

It is 7'oclock, I was late home from work due to an assignment that i wanted to get ahead on. By the time I get home I am feeling extremley tired and I cannot be bothered to make a proper meal. I walk to the fridge and open it to see what there is for me to eat. All of the out of date foodstuffs have been automaticaly thrown away by the fridge, they will be recycled tomorrow as animal feed or something. I see i have organic local eggs and some local cheese. Future

FutureToday is 2020/1/1. It is just like yesterday. The war is still continuing. It has started since 2010. In 2010, that year was a horrible year. Almost every energy ran out. Every country’s governments were crushed down at the same time. There were riots everywhere. All of the big company’s bosses were killed xdeadx in the riots. Troops fought each other everywhere. Food was bought up xawayx at once. There were no more food supplies in any shops. The economy was all crushed down. All the…See More

public servants

The exchange works directly for state and public workers and servants. It gives them credit in exchange for the amount of public work they contribute to the community. The more constructive they are based off a base rate the more credit they recieve.
