The flu has slowly been traveling across the United States. The pandemic flu has just reached Florida. Although many of Florida's residents have been infected with the flu, we were lucky enough to prepare to deal with the great numbers of people that have been affected. By organizing a group of experienced individuals online, Florida is prepared to address the issues that will arise during this pandemic. Similarly to the Pearl River Flu Clinics, we organized a number of medical professionals…

One piece of insight that I think is most surprising and important from the Secrets of Crisis Communication is managing panic in a pandemic. When disaster strikes in the U.S. or anywhere in the world for that matter, the media always is among the first who are on scene. The media has the ability to disclose what is unknown by the public. Typically what is feared the most is the unknown factor. Being in a tense situation and not knowing/ understanding what is going on is incredibly…

When I am 100, I will pass on the wisdom of how to live a long, happy life. First off, I will tell the younger generations to not let the little things get to them. I would tell them to spend their time doing things they are passionate about. I would educate them about the importance of the environment and how it is important to appreciate the Earth's natural beauty.

The case study that I reviewed outlined Botswana's natural resource management transformation and conservation. Through this case study I learned that the local communities cannot achieve the goals of sustainable development on their own. Additionally I also learned that involvement of all in decision making is critical in the success of natural resource management transformation and conservation.

Florida Resilient Communities Initiative (FRCI) has teamed up with varying programs and colleges and programs at the University of Florida, such as the College of Design, Construction and Planning (DCP) and the Program for Resource Efficient Communities (PREC) in the Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). These groups are engaged in collaborative efforts related to creating and sustaining local communities and regions faced with various threats. These threats include resource…

Ushahidi could be used in Florida in a number of ways. Hurricane season strikes Florida every summer. Technology such as Ushahidi could allow people to stay informed during these natural disasters, whether it is through tracking the storm, safe preparation or how to take safe escape routes. Health outbreaks are also significant things that Ushahidi could help track. After taking microbiology I am well aware that a virus can outbreak just about anywhere. In fact recently, Gainesville had a…

Of the 100 Global Giving projects designed to provide equal education and economic opportunity to women, my favorite is Sports to Empower Women and Girls in Rwanda. Through this project AKWOS empowers women through sport & education to improve their rights, break barriers between social cla****, raise women's standing in society, enhance unity & reconciliation and prevent HIV/AIDs. In the year of 2020, Women and Girls in Rwanda will have surpassed their goal of 330,000 and through…

I was in awe to discover the Global Giving website, and all of the different opportunities that society has to donate and empower women for a number of different causes. I shared the 100 ways to support women's equal opportunities and rights with my friends and family via email. In particular I loved reading about the sports to empower women and girls in Rwanda. They have a goal of $330,000.

From the Women Watch news feed, the Story of how women in Papua, a remote highly underdeveloped province are gaining independence inspired me. Papua is a place where tribal culture is strong, including the domination of women by men, until recently. Although in the past many development projects have not worked the International Fund for Agricultural Development put together a unique development project that is showing promising results. The facilitators of this project work with community…

I purchased an iPhone case awhile back that had recently broke. The iPhone case has a soft inner shell and a hard outer shell. Although I could go re-buy the same case, I only needed the outer shell so I looked on the company's website to see what my options were. In order to replace my outer case I had to: send a photo of the damaged part, my receipt, my shipping address and paypal e-mail address to the company to pay for shipping and I could get my hard case. I had to register for paypal…

I think that Bitcoin the virtual, no middle man currency is slowly changing the world. Bitcoins are very pivotal to the future of money due to the fact that there are no additional fees tied to using them. Transactions are also anonymous. No matter what your currency is there are several marketplaces called “bitcoin exchanges” allow people to buy or sell bitcoins using different currencies. It is so convenient that you can send bitcoins digitally. Bitcoins can be mined/earned by solving…

On World Water Day in 2020, I would ask the wh*** planet to drastically conserve water by not using it. The frequently used mantra "you don't know what you've got until it is gone" applies perfectly to this situation. You really appreciate things when you can't use them. Imagine all the uses the world has for water such as cooking, sanitation, consumption and many other uses. A day without using water for all of its purposes would really puts into perspective how important water is, and it…

I would make an alliance with water 1st international. In order to further their water security effort I would not only donate to the cause but I would also help organize a 5K, like their Carry5 Walk for Water in Seattle. During the Carry5 Walk for Water, a participant has to experience what millions of people around the world have to do everyday, which is carry water for 5 kilometers. This occurs due to a lack of clean water locally. Participants in the 5k will know the taxing work of…

My favorite inspiring clean water project is water 1st International. What stood out to me is water 1st International's goal to create permanent solutions. Many organizations that provide water to areas in need typically create solutions that only last for a year or two. Water 1st International has found that in order for their efforts of providing water to last the projects must be independently owned and operated by community members themselves, place women in key leadership roles, and…

On the 4th of July in 2020, everyone will be using a energy efficient gas grill for their BBQs. These grills are called the Cook Number Gas Grills which reduce energy consumption. Their energy consumption is half, or less than the average gas grill. If the US market shifted to Cook Number Gas Grills using just 30,000 BTUs/hour or equally efficient ones, we would save 30 Million barrels of crude oil/year.

Little changes in your day to day life can go a long way. Everyday I use a calculator and a TV remote that require AAA batteries. A new way to power my calculator and TV remote, in a more efficient fashion, is to use rechargeable batteries. Not only are these batteries a new better way to power, they also are less harmful to the environment. When taken to landfills, most normal batteries release harmful metals like mercury and lead into the environment. Since I will be reusing the…

The Heros that I wrote about in social innovation actually pertain to this blog post. Imagine if you took a resource that that is seemingly everywhere and used it to generate electricity. Aviva Presser Aiden & Hugo Van Vuuren did just that. As leaders in energy technology, they used soil and its microbe inhabitants to generate microbial fuel which ultimately can be used to generate electricity. Groundbreaking energy technology such soil and its microbial fuel can lead to new…

In 2020, I will be eating a nutritious meal with my family. I will know exactly where my food came from. It will be fresh and not mass produced. My food will not have growth hormones or additives that can be potentially harmful to my or my family's health. My food will be catered to my nutritional needs based on my genetics, as will my other family member's meals. My food will taste delicious.
