A crash course in changing the world.
One piece of insight that I think is most surprising and important from the Secrets of Crisis Communication is managing panic in a pandemic. When disaster strikes in the U.S. or anywhere in the world for that matter, the media always is among the first who are on scene. The media has the ability to disclose what is unknown by the public. Typically what is feared the most is the unknown factor. Being in a tense situation and not knowing/ understanding what is going on is incredibly frightening. During a disaster journalists and the media play a huge role in helping the government manage fear. For example, when there was the bombing at the Boston Marathon, the media was on scene where the bomber went in someones backyard, however until the government had control on the situation the media, was limited as to what information they could disclose. In the article it stated that, "Panic really is about a loss of social order, a loss of internal order. Most of the time people are running around doing what they believe is self-protective. It's not panic, but it might not be social order." During the bombing people were trying to capture suspicious looking people around the area of the marathon, due to the panic that ensued. Learning how to manage this panic is highly important for well-being of the public during tense situations.
