A crash course in changing the world.
As natural disasters, food shortages or political crises are unlikely in a country like Germany I will pick a nuclear meltdown in a German nuclear power plant, something comparable to F**ushima or Tschernobyl. An overheated reactor that goes off in a blast, spreading high amounts of radiation. First thing that needs to be done in this catastrophic scenario would be inform as many people as possible that live or work within a certain radius around the accident site. This could be achieved via a tracing system allowing Ushahidi to trace the current GPS position of its users and to send SMS to every user who is being detected within the polluted zone. The next step would be to provide joint transport for the people within the danger zone because if everybody used his own car, the resulting traffic jams would end up in a disaster allowing no one to flee. People would need to be informed about this which could also be achieved by using Ushahidi. Next other counries/governments need to be informed. As it would take too long to get in touch personally within every person in charge, Ushahidi could be used to spread information rapidly and to everyone. At the same time, the governments of other nations could take their own steps to secure their people based on real time information from Ushahidi. Even international support systems could be organized on that basis.
Why do you think that a food shortage or a political crisis in Germany is unlikely? Germany for example does not plant very much food - most of the vegetables and fruits are importet! So to my mind, it is defenitely possible ...
