The U.S Agency for International Development asked Ashok Gadgil to help solve a problem that affected millions in Darfur. Gadgil, with the aid of Christina Galitsky the two traveled to Sudan to learn about the style of cooking and the instruments that they use. The two along with students developed an efficient cook stove made of cheap sheetmetal. The design of the stove along with an iron grate to improve combustion made the stoves 55-75% more efficient.
This is a huge deal because the people of Darfur traveled up to 9 miles to gather wood and while they were a way the men risked being killed and the women raped and tortured by the Janjaweed Militia Now families will be closer to each other more often creating a safer atmosphere.
Ashok Gadgil has also invented a water purification system by using UV light. That will be for a future post.
I have found Ashok Gadgil's email and have emailed him with the purpose of learning more.
