On Pop Tech Social Innovators page a pod-cast from a teacher called James O'Brien caught my attention. You are about to ask why.
Because I was surprised to see the words 'Brooklyn' and 'Arts and Media' in one term. Brooklyn is, in my mind, a place with a lot of social problems (I must admit I have never been there, so that is just my prejudice) and therefore not necessarily a place perfectly fit for 'Arts and Media'. So after I watched his cast I must say: His cause is just and his ideas are very, very good. Why?
Because his approach, his vision concerns problems I also experience myself. A lot of friends of mine are teachers, some working primarily with students with an underclass background. They tell me, they have no chance to work with their students properly. They cannot help their students to improve their situations, They can not make them fit for life.
They can just make them fit for unemployment. A hopeless perspective. Then I ask myself who has given up. Teachers? Parents? Students? All of them?
The reason why I like this cast. - Mister O'Brien obviously has not given up.
And he has a really good approach, one that could be used in comparable environments. Of course, there are differences, but there are also some common features underclass people share. There is a reason that everyone in the western world has roughly the same idea about an 'underclass' (speaking from a sociological perspective).
Arts and Media provide some space which levels the playing field. Success and failure do not necessarily coincide with your social background. Every participant can develop himself/herself in such a sphere. And the skills you aquire there, help the participant in his/her social envirionment.
The most important thing is his approach is that students are allowed to express themselves. They are not oppressed - normally the fate of the underclass. And this makes all the difference, because they now have chance to develop confidence. A confidence based on skills not on a habit.
I think it is really good that he tries to compete with other high schools, that the students write the same exmams as the other schools, The students, after they graduate from BCAM, have to compete with other graduates from other schools anyway. I hope that his concept is a success.
Don't give up, man.
