I read a book a while back -- can't remember much about it, but one description stuck -- one of the protagonists was described as a "mad, impossible angel". In thinking about this mission and the characteristics I admire in social innovators, these three words kept echoing in my head -- Mad. Impossible. Angel. Of all of the innovators I could think of, Alchemy seems to fit this bill.
Mad -- social innovators see the world differently. Where some see challenges, innovators see opportunities. Where some fear to tread, innovators rush in. Where many stay close to the shore, innovators take the risks to create change. Others may see them as a bit unhinged, misunderstood and certainly outliers. Alchemy -- from what I know is someone who sees the incredible potential of thousands of passionate, dedicated agents around the world who want to act to make change.
Impossible -- Innovators take on the unthinkable. They go after the biggest problems. They push the boundaries of what some may think feasible. They act, fail, get back up, try again, and little by little chip away at the impossible, making it improbable, and slowing realizing the possible. Alchemy sees no challenge that through the collective spirit of the EVOKE network can not be conquered.
Angel -- At the heart of any social innovator is well....the heart. To be successful, I think you need to lead with the heart and your passion to affect change. You need to be empathetic, a listener. Innovators act with spirit, to look out for others and to find their true calling. Alchemy seems to have found a purpose and is acting to share this vision.
I will continue to closely follow Alchemy and hope to see him some day....soon.
