What started as an enquiry with a lecturer has led to me following, not a single Social Innovator, but an entire project.
Over a year ago, as part of the Computer Science 101 course at Rhodes University, I attended a lecture by Dr Hannah Thinyane, in which she detailed some of the projects she had worked on in her years involved with IT. Towards the end of her lecture, she began to tell the class about the possibilities of developing information technologies that could be accessed from cellphones.
In a country like South Africa, where the access to computers is minimal, but the access to cellphones is extremely high, it makes perfect sense to use this technology to empower rural communities (
"Innovate on existing platforms.").
The lecture stuck with me, and when faced with this objective, I made contact with Dr Thinyane, who put me in contact with the
Siyakhula Living Lab, an operation involving volunteers. I met Sibukele Gumbo - the project leader, who introduced me to some of the Lab's
projects. Dr Thinyane then placed me on the mailing list for the project.
I am hoping to follow their projects over the next months.
