"Innovate on existing platforms."
This piece of advice from
Ethan Zuckerman caught my eye - especially since I was already considering a hero to shadow. Exhibit A gives cellphones as an example, and it is one such project (using cellphones as the basis for rural development) that I have decided to follow, but more on that later.
Working on existing platforms not only decreases the amount of work that needs to be done (and so increases the amount of development that can be made), but it also ensures that those who will be working with the innovations are comfortable with them: While the majority of South Africans are uncomfortable with computers, far more are entirely comfortable with cellphones. Hence, if we can develop information technologies which use mobile phones rather than computers, we will reach a far greater audience - and one who could benefit far more from such technologies.
