A crash course in changing the world.
The power player who I chose to follow is Amitabha Sadangi, CEO of International Development Enterprises India (IDEI), for the successful deployment of low-cost irrigation technology to farmers in India. Sadangi was chosen as a finalist for the Zayed Future Energy Prize, a global annual award established to recognize achievements in the renewable energy industry. This technology, which has reached over one million farmers, and has resulted in diesel savings of 533 million litres and a reduction in carbon emissions of 1.8 million tones to me, is an incredible one. The Zayed Future Energy Prize jury, which consisted of leading international renewable energy experts, selected Amitabha Sadangi as a finalist due to the widespread benefits his technology has provided across India, while promoting environmental conservation. The deployment of the irrigation technology has resulted in savings of 3146 million cubic litres of water and 417 million kilowatts of electricity. Overall, five million people have benefitted in terms of increased income security and environmental well-being. I feel that Sadangi is a most deserving candidate to be my chosen power player for this week as the work he has done has positively impacted the lives of so many people in India, a place where there are so many people in need. The reason why I admire it so much as well is because it contributes to helping/saving the environment, instead of contributing to its destruction. I definitely feel that Amitabha Sadangi has done really amazing work, and deserves to be my power player of the week.
